Roller Derby IS Chicago History

As I continue my research on Chicago roller skating history, I am learning that roller derby IS Chicago history.

What do I mean by that? When I mention to people that I’m researching roller skating in Chicago, one of the first questions they ask, “Are you a derby skater?”

When I say no, the next question is, “Do you roller skate?”

Anyway, for readers who are unaware, roller derby is still hot in Chicago. I found this out a few years ago when I met Jane Rickard, who featured Windy City Rollers on Chicago Now.

Last year, I had the pleasure of speaking with Barbara “Queen B” Dolan, the founder of Derby Lite, a program that focuses on fitness and derby skating. She was really cool and open to helping me with my research.

Why is roller derby Chicago history?

According to Derby Lite, “Roller Derby was started right here in Chicago in 1935 as the first sport to give equal playing time to men and women. With crowds in the tens of thousands, roller derby gained more fans nationally than football, baseball and basketball combined with live games, and then in the 1960’s and ‘70’s with televised matches (that sometimes included theatrics along with their athletics).”

So, if you or anyone you know really enjoy(ed) roller derby as a skater, spectator, coach – anything, please share your experiences and memories.
